Blake Shelton Counters Current Single With a Little Gospel Grit on “Jesus Got a Tight Grip”

Good ol’ boy Blake Shelton seems to have a message in mind. After releasing his new single, “Hell Right,” the singer, songwriter and coach on The Voice has released another song for his fans to enjoy, and while this song is just as upbeat and positive, the message is much more spiritual.

“Jesus Got a Tight Grip,” is a toe-tapping declaration of faith and a gritty message of gratitude that Blake co-wrote with proven hitmakers Rhett Akins, Jessi Alexander and Chase McGill.

Uplifting and joyful, lines like, “I’ve been a little more cold beer / Than holy water, it’s true, / More Saturday night on an old barstool / Than a Sunday morning pew, provide a level of relatability that could get hands, beers and, perhaps a few Bibles, in the air in solidarity. They also serve as a solid reminder that being a believer shouldn’t imply perfection, but instead declare forgiveness.

The production on “Jesus Got a Tight Grip” is just as energized and triumphant as the lyrics. It’s also incredibly balanced with plenty of acoustic guitars, church organ, drums and lush harmonies enveloping Blake’s husky drawl. CMA Musician of the Year nominee and longtime member of Blake’s band, Jenee Fleenor, puts down her signature fiddle and picks up a guitar for the song as well.

“Jesus Got a Tight Grip” is just one of the five new songs on Blake’s upcoming collection, Fully Loaded: God’s Country, set to drop on December 13. Seven songs from previously released albums will also be included in the package.

This isn’t Blake’s first foray into music with a less secular tone. In 2016, he released the breathtaking “Savior’s Shadow,” which was also co-written with Jessi Alexander and Jon Randall.
